SRWHMG Holds First Annual Fundraiser
It was two years ago, that the Salt River wild horses were almost removed and “disposed” of by the Forest Service. Due to the unprecedented public outrage ignited by the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, these historic and majestic animals are still grazing the banks of the Salt River and are enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year.
In order to continue and promote their mission of keeping the horses in their habitat the management group is now selling tickets to their first annual fundraiser, “Wild Night,” which will be held on October 22nd at The Pera Club in Tempe. The “Wild Night” will feature a live auction and silent auction, rescued Salt River wild horses, a comedian, and a great band with dancing. It will be wildly entertaining!
Little Gem, the rescued Salt River foal (2 months old), will be at the fundraiser for public education about how and when we rescue a Salt River wild horse. Gem is doing wonderful and her brother Diamond, who we rescued after he had his hoof caught in a cattle guard, will be there also.
“We are excited with the enormous public support for our work and so grateful for our sponsors and donors,” said Simone Netherlands, President and Founder of the active group of wild horse protectors, “we have been able to rescue and treat fatally injured Salt River wild horses, fix miles of fencing to keep horses off the roads, and we have grown from just 10 volunteers to over 80. Essentially we are trying to prove that these wild horses can be managed by the public and for the public”.
The ultimate goal of the group is to build a wild horse education center.
The land has already been purchased and is conveniently situated on the border of the Tonto National Forest. The building, at first, will be a visitor center and later, if funds allow, a wild horse injury center.
“It will be so great to have an actual building to work out of, treat injured wild horses, and welcome the public.” Simone says, “We hope that lots of people will want to come take a walk on the wild side with us!”
