On July 31st, 2015, a beautiful wild foal was born to Sapphire and Shadowfax, we named him Diamond. —On that fateful day the Forest Service posted the impound notice for all of the Salt River wild horses! Can you believe that is 10 years ago?

We had 7 days to save the Salt River wild horses and Diamond was a big part of it.

He looked into the cameras and whinnied. Diamond became the face of our movement for their humane management.

But just one year later, Diamond vanished. We searched everywhere. We found him, but he had apparently been stuck in a cattleguard and ripped his own hoof off. He was alone, and would surely die without quick action.

What followed was a 72-hour race against time—40 volunteers, a human round pen, an overnight watch, then sedation, and rush to the hospital for surgery. His hoof came completely off and unfortunately his coffinbone was broken. The vet said put him down, a hoof is never going to grow back.

But as you know, we don’t give up. After a full year of casts, boots and plasma pads, a new hoof grew from the bottom up, something veterinarians had never seen before!

🎉 Today, Diamond is 10!! He has special glue- on soft shoes. He’s walking, playing, and thriving—thanks to many people who make one amazing team, SRWHMG!

But there’s a heartbreaking twist:

🚨 Ten years later, in spite of years of humane wild horse management and natural population reduction, their future is again at stake.
