Annihalation of the Salt River wild horses temporarily halted but removal still impending

The Salt River wild horses are in danger of removal by the US Forest Service.

The Salt River Wild Horse Management Management Group is leading the charge to secure lasting protection for the iconic Salt River wild horses in their habitat in the Tonto National Forest. Members of the Salt River Management Group have closely monitored and recorded data on the Salt River wild horses for almost 20 years.

After the U.S. Forest Service published a July 31, 2015 notice of intent to roundup and eradicate this iconic wild horse herd, our group organized a press conference and rally attended by hundreds of Arizonans. The resulting media coverage has sparked international outrage and  wide political support.

We filed a lawsuit and sought an injunction to stop the roundup.  As a result of the Forest Service committing to no action for 3 weeks at that time, the injunction was dismissed by the honorable judge Wake. Our lawsuit is ongoing and negotiations with the Forest Service are ongoing.

After our negotiations and much political pressure, the Forest Service has committed to and announced a delay of the roundup of the horses for 120 days, in order to talk about the future of these wild horses with the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group and other interested parties.

It is our goal to work with the Forest Service like we have for the past few years, not against them. We are looking for a public/private partnership  in order to manage the area for optimum safety, environmental balance and well being of the historic wild horses. Thanks to our many volunteers, wild horse experts, and scientific approach, we have the means and the enthusiasm to accomplish a lot. We now have 120 days to accomplish something that will be beneficial to all parties and stakeholders.

Although we are trying very hard, the  Salt River wild horses  are not out of danger yet!  The roundup has not been cancelled, only postponed. Legally, the Forest Service can round up our Salt River horses and send them to an auction where we may have to outbid kill buyers for them at any time after the promised 120-day delay and extra 30 day notice.
