HORSES ON THE ROAD – SLOW DOWN!

Our “Bad Boys” — Centurion, Dreamer, Charlie, and Pacer — have been roaming the dangerous stretch of Bush Hwy between Water Users and the Saguaro Lake Marina and Butcher Jones. This is farther than they usually go and the last unfenced part of Salt River horse habitat. The grass is greener here, literally, thanks to recent rains.

Our volunteers have anxiously been patrolling day and night, walking miles, staying through the night, and doing everything we can to keep this beloved boy band safe. Several close calls have already happened, and we’ve had to call MCSO multiple times.

Here’s how you can help keep them safe:

  • Slow down when driving this stretch—especially at night.
  • Watch for volunteers in safety vests—horses are nearby.
  • Share this post with anyone traveling between Mesa, Fountain Hills, or Payson.
  • See horses on the side of the road? Call our hotline: 480-868-9301. We’ll guide them to safety.
  • See horses IN the road? Call 911 immediately—then our hotline. This is life-threatening.
  • Want to help more? Volunteer with our road patrol, it requires just 4 hours a week.

Hitting a horse is tragic—for them and for you. Every slowed car, every watchful eye, every shared post helps.

A huge tip of the hat to our volunteers for walking miles, staying late, and keeping this boy band safe.

P.S. We have offered for years to fence this last stretch to keep everyone safe, but we are still waiting for final authorization. On top of that, a decision on the new management contract has not yet been made, so until then, we’re doing everything we can to keep them out of danger.
