The River.

The Salt River is life to these horses. It is a social place for them to gather. It is the place that offers water to drink throughout the day, especially in the summer when temps can reach 120 degrees. It is a place for them to cool their bodies off. In the summer, when the sun turns the desert grasses brown, the eel grass grows in the river. This eel grass is the wild horses main food supply. These are true water horses in that they will submerge their whole heads in the water to grab a mouthful of eel grass to eat. They will whip it around to slap flies off their backs. The sunlight will catch the droplets of water spraying through the air and create a shimmering display. Mares will share eel grass with their foals who aren’t old enough to know how to dive for it yet. Yes, water is life to these horses. We all know how important water is.

Please when at the river give the horses their space so they can get to the river, and please do not litter. Please haul out everything you brought in. Fishermen do not leave hooks and line laying around. Make sure all campfires are put out. Respect this beautiful place and the animals who call this home. It is a piece of heaven on earth.
