This is a wild horse funeral, it is sad, but also amazing. Elephants and wild horses, they realize what death is, and they mourn deeply. They pay their respects usually for an entire day, first her own family band, but then other bands come too.

This is the funeral of Cholla. She was at least 24 but possibly even older. She lived a beautiful free life and had 8 known offspring of which 5 are still alive. We monitored her closely towards her decline, because we did not want her to suffer. In the end her hips gave out, but she was spared much suffering, through humane euthanasia. We are very grateful to our Salt River horse Liaison Ken. Humane management includes as much mercy as possible, when it’s needed.
