The eelgrass grows on the bottom of the Salt River. Count how long this mare can hold her breath! The head dunking/ eelgrass snorkeling is a learned (evolved) Salt River horse behavior. Young foals learn to nab it from their parents when young and start to learn to snorkel around a year old. The river eelgrass provides great nutrition when the forage gets low at the end of the summer and also helps to keep the river from clogging with it.
