🚨 A HORSE WAS DOWN IN THE SALT RIVER… HERE’S WHAT WE DO NEXT 🐴

We received many calls and texts on our hotline about a Salt River wild horse who had been down for an unusually long time today. We truly appreciate every person who took the time to contact us. MCSO even helped provide the horse’s exact location. Thank You!

🎥 One of the first things we determine when volunteers arrive on scene is which horse it is. From there, they send videos to our hotline, and we assess the horse and her condition, and determine what—if anything—needs to happen next.

🐴 So, what happened? The horse is Elite, born in 2019. We do believe something was off with her. She could have been colicking. There are currently many toxic weeds—and even potentially poisonous snail eggsalong the river. Another possibility is that she was kicked in a painful spot and went into shock. We’ve seen this happen before; it’s very dramatic, but horses can recover completely.

❤️ The good news is that Elite appears to be recovering well after the lieutenant stallions forced her to get up and keep up with the band. Whatever happened, she is back on her feet and doing much better. Thank goodness. Like Simone says, any day we don’t have to euthanize a Salt River wild horse is a great day!
