A Story of Love, Loss & Hope… Happy 8th Birthday, Nakota! 🎉🐴

Today we celebrate Nakota’s 8th birthday, a beautiful, gentle mare whose life began with heartbreak but became a story of hope.

Nakota was only three weeks old when she and her mother, Cheyenne, were rescued. Cheyenne had suffered a devastating injury after severing a front leg tendon, leaving her unable to protect herself or her tiny foal. Bachelor stallions repeatedly chased and separated them, putting little Nakota’s life in immediate danger.

Although Cheyenne’s chances of recovery were slim, we refused to give up. With expert veterinary care, around-the-clock attention, and the help of James and Shelley French, who generously donated their time using the Trust Technique, we did everything possible to give Cheyenne a chance. Working with patience and respect, we were able to keep her comfortable for three precious months that proved invaluable for Nakota.

Sadly, Cheyenne’s injury continued to worsen, and the kindest gift we could give her was a peaceful goodbye. It was one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make, but we promised her that her baby would be safe.

Nakota was welcomed into a new family with Lady, a wonderful auntie, and another rescued orphan, Agave. The two foals quickly became inseparable and remain the best of friends today.

Because rescued wild horses cannot be returned to the wild, our mission is to give them the happiest life possible, freedom to roam, strong family bonds, and lots of love from dedicated volunteers.

Today, Nakota is thriving. She is sweet, beautiful, and deeply loved by her rescue family. Every birthday she celebrates is a tribute to her mother’s courage, the people who fought for them, and the incredible resilience of these wild horses.

Happy 8th Birthday, Nakota! ❤️ We know Cheyenne would be so proud of the amazing mare you have become.
