The story of the Alpine wild horses is a heartbreaking one.
The contractor for the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forest removed every last Alpine wild horse from the forest. Many were sent to slaughter auctions in Texas, where we were forced to bid against kill buyers — paying between $900 and $2,000 per horse — simply to save them from slaughter. In addition to purchase prices, we covered transport, veterinary care, geldings, and long-term sanctuary placement.
With your support, we were able to rescue 440 of the approximately 600 horses who were removed. Many are now thriving at the Wild Horse Refuge in Colorado and at Nirvana Sanctuary in Texas. Tragically, we still do not know what happened to the missing horses.
We currently have litigation pending against the contractor, Rail Lazy H, and the Forest Service. Our lawsuit alleges serious misconduct, including self-dealing and shill bidding at public auctions, as well as inadequate notice practices that made it significantly more difficult to save these horses in time.
Apache’s band remains safe at our SRWHMG sanctuary and is thriving — you can sponsor them directly.
When you donate to the Alpine Wild Horse Fund, every dollar goes toward the ongoing care of rescued Alpine horses and/or the litigation to hold those responsible accountable. Please indicate which fund you would like your donation to support.
Thank you for standing with us for the Alpine wild horses — and for those we are still fighting for.
