The Salt River wild horses live in a 20.000 acre habitat surrounded by civilization on all sides: Mesa, Apache Junction, Fountain Hills, Scottsdale and Phoenix are all less than half an hour drive from the Salt River and all these cities and local communities benefit from their presence through tourism! The Salt River wild horses roam the lower Salt River area within the Tonto National Forest – a 40-minute drive from Old Town Scottsdale. These mustangs descend from horses brought by 16th-century Spanish explorers and the Akimel O’odham Native American tribe. They’re often seen along the riverbanks, cooling off in the river or crossing the riverbed.
