Do you have a best friend? Are you aware that horses form strong relationships with one another, particularly among stallions?
Stallions develop deep ties to each other due to being emancipated from their birth bands, usually around the age of two, and having to find other bachelors. They learn to lean on one another as they figure out how to live on their own. Over the years, our volunteers have documented hundreds of instances where young stallions connect with other lost souls, forming lifelong friendships.
Many of you may recognize at least two of the horses in these photos. One of the photos, taken in August of 2016, shows Lindor, Little Chief, and Amber, along with another mare, Velvet. All of them were two years old, born into four different bands, and were emancipated from their birth bands. The boys found each other shortly after being removed from their respective bands in late 2015 and not too long after, they found Amber and Velvet, becoming known as the “Fab 4”, though they were part of a band with a strong stallion at the time. Both boys developed into worthy lieutenants for their band.
Fast forward to 2024. The “Fab 4” are now the “Fab 3”, where Lindor is now a lead stallion, and his best friend, Little Chief, is his lieutenant. Amber remains with her boys, while Velvet is with another stallion. This band is now one of the most recognized and photographed bands on the river.
Stay tuned for the continuing saga of “As the River Flows”
Please don’t forget, now is a great time to purchase a Salt River Wild Horse Management Group 2025 calendar. They make wonderful gifts to give to mom, dad, aunts, uncles, and neighbors, oh and don’t forget teachers. By the way, rumor has it, there may be a photo of Lindor in the calendar..
