Swept Toward Disaster, Saved by Courage: Iggy’s Story
Did you know that this beautiful mare is one of Lancelot’s offspring? Eight years ago, a terrifying night in the South Canal nearly changed her story forever.
Late on the night of May 20, 2018, our ☎️hotline rang with an urgent call: two wild horses had fallen into the South Canal and were being swept toward a deadly transfer dam.
The horses were 2-year-old Felicity and 10-month-old Igraine (“Iggy”). Trapped in 11 feet of water, they were slowly drowning from exhaustion. Although not Iggy’s mother, Felicity protected the younger filly by positioning herself against the current and refused to leave her side, even when rescuers guided them toward safety.
With the help of 14 🧑🚒firefighters, SRP, 👮MCSO, and our 👨⚕️veterinarian from Arizona Equine, both fillies were pulled up the 15-foot canal walls and transported to our facility. Felicity had inhaled a great deal of water and remained unconscious for nearly ten minutes, but both horses survived.
After being transported separately, their reunion at the facility was incredible to witness. To this day, they remain close companions.
As we 🎉celebrate Iggy’s 9️⃣th birthday today, we’re grateful she survived that terrifying night and continues to thrive at the rescue.
Wild horse family bonds are truly unbreakable. ❤️
