This is a very special Salt River wild horse behavior of eelgrass snorkeling.
The eelgrass grows on the bottom of the Salt River. Count how long this mare can hold her breath! The head dunking/ eelgrass snorkeling is a learned (evolved) Salt River horse behavior. Young foals learn to nab it from their parents when young and start to learn to snorkel around a year old. The river eelgrass provides great nutrition when the forage gets low at the end of the summer and also helps to keep the river from clogging with it. SRWHMG manages these horses humanely under contract with the state of Arizona and the public loves to see them and watch this interesting behavior!
