Arizonans and legislators stand up for the “Salties”!

As most of you know, we’ve been somewhat “reined in” by the confines of our contract, which is why we were not at the rally today—but we are moved to tears seeing all the footage of Arizonans and legislators standing up for the “Salties.” Thank you ” Friends of the Salt River wild horses” and Nick Fierro, plus everyone who came!

We have worked so hard, for so many years, to humanely reduce the population so that removals would never be necessary. We’ve accomplished an unheard of success reducing the foaling rate from more than 100 foals a year to an average of just two. Without our fertility control program, there would realistically be more than 1000 Salt River wild horses today. We’ve prevented a lot of suffering, because they would have been removed.

However, as we’ve learned, it was not enough, and we’ve had to make a difficult compromise to prevent a mass removal by another contractor.

But choosing which horse gets to stay and which will go is going to feel like a Sophies choice … like choosing between our own children, whom we have watched grow up wild and free.

This bill , SB1199 would not stop removals entirely, but would place a temporary hold on removals until more science is available about the genetic diversity of the Salt River wild horse herd, so that we don’t end up with a herd that will eventually self extinct.

In the meantime, we would continue our fertility control program, rescues when needed, and horses would continue to die of old age, so the herd would still be reducing while we all just hold our horses! Definate pun intended.

We are working hard to ensure that our government partners and other stakeholders can support this bill as well—which is why we are carefully negotiating to make it as logical and reasonable as possible. We want to thank Rep Cody Reim for his initiative and passion to solve this issue while keeping everyone’s concerns in mind!

We want to thank each and every one of YOU for standing up for the cherished and beloved Salt River wild horses—who are our rightful inheritance from the past, and exactly what makes Arizona so incredibly special.

And by the way, we almost forgot, today is also Arizona Gives Day, one of the most important days of the year for SRWHMG! Remember that we manage these horses without charging the state of Arizona a dime. That’s why we need your support—so we can continue to proudly say: these horses are managed for the public, and by the public!

We could not do it without YOU. If everyone who loves them, is part of this mission, and gives just a little, then no one has to give a lot. Thank you for your support!!
