Arizona Department of Agriculture urges visitors to the Tonto National Forest to refrain from feeding and/or watering the wild horses.

The Arizona Department of Agriculture would like to remind visitors to the Tonto National Forest that feeding and/or watering the Salt River Wild Horses without prior authorization from the AZDA or county sheriff is in direct violation of AZ 3-1491 “Salt river horse herd; necessary interaction; written authorization; violation; classification; definition” and can result in a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Unnecessary feeding and/or watering of the horses can have a negative impact on the herd as a whole. With approval from the AZDA, strategic feedings and watering are done by the contracted management party to help relocate wild horse bands to the Salt River and become self-sustainable.
