Moonfire was with the wrong mare; “Bad grandma”. She had no milk but was possessive over the newborn while Moonshadow had not bonded with her foal and was far away from it. So we had a very difficult problem to solve. In the field. But we did it! And that’s how you can still see him today, happy, healthy wild and free! He is 4 months old now and a very spunky boy, bugging his grandmas every day!

The Salt River wild horses are one of Arizona’s most treasured and sought-after experiences, and the number one question we get is:
“Where can we go see them?”

The truth is… there’s no single spot we can send you to. Because they are still wild horses—moving freely, choosing their own paths, just as they should be.

That’s part of what makes seeing them so special. It’s not guaranteed, it’s a moment of pure magic, like this one, old stallion Champ splashing in the river, just because.

But here’s the good news:
If you’re willing to slow down, step into their world, and respect their space (at least 50 feet), your chances are very good.

We’ll show you where to park…
And from there, it’s simple: take a walk along the river, keep your eyes open, and let the experience unfold.

Part 3: A closer look at Wind 🩺
This is where things get even more important…
While Wind was safely sedated, we were able to take X-rays — giving us a clear look inside his leg, the one he broke back in 2014 that healed crooked. What we saw helps us understand exactly what he’s been carrying all these years… and how we can support him better going forward.
At the same time, our farrier got to work — carefully trimming and balancing his hooves to take pressure off that old injury and help him move more comfortably. Every adjustment matters when a horse has been compensating for so long 🐎✨
This is the kind of detailed, hands-on care Wind could never have received in the wild… and it’s all about giving him the comfort and dignity he deserves now.
