Hello, baby number THREE! And happy Earth Day!
Sacajawea lost a premature foal in 2020 due to a stick in her belly that became infected. She was so upset for days, we really wanted her to have a healthy baby one day. Here is her son, and great great grandson of Shadowfax! (Shadowfax -> Flicka – > Winnetou – > Sacajawea -> new colt)
The Salt River Herd is humanely managed by and for the public, successfully and cost effectively. Fertility control PZP is proving 99 % effacacy so far, (when applied every year) and while permanent sterility is a possibility, it appears mares are not sterile, even after 5 darts. For the last 3 years, only one foal per year has survived, therefore it is good to have 3 foals this year!
