Further clarification on Bill HB2340, which we formerly opposed, but now fully support; We sincerely hope it will pass the house today.
The Townsend substitute amendment adopted yesterday by the house, removed the provision that would have have placed the herd under the management of the State Department of Agriculture, which would have cost the state an estimated $1 million annually and resulted in their management as livestock, not wild animals. The bill as amended however recognizes that the Salt River Wild Horses are not livestock or stray animals.
Additionally, the amendment establishes clear jurisdiction and provides a clear process for the SRWHMG to be able to resolve any incident that requires interaction with the herd in order to protect the health and safety of the horses and/or the public. The bill also criminalizes harassing, shooting or killing a Salt River wild horse and affirms their importance to the state.
If passed by the House, HB 2340 will proceed to the Senate.
Thank you for your support!!
